SELF HATRED – The Facebook Failure Made Simple

Self-Hatred

Self-hatred (also called self-loathing) refers to an extreme dislike or hatred of oneself, or being angry at or even prejudiced towards oneself. The term is also used to designate a dislike or hatred of a group, family, social class, mental illness, or stereotype to which one belongs and/or has. For instance, “ethnic self-hatred” is the extreme dislike of one’s ethnic group or cultural classification. It may be associated with aspects of autophobia.

The term “self-hatred” is used infrequently by psychologists and psychiatrists, who would usually describe people who hate themselves as “persons with low self-esteem”. Self-hatred and shame are important factors in some or many mental disorders, especially disorders that involve a perceived defect of oneself (e.g. body dysmorphic disorder). Self-hatred is also a prime feature of many personality disorders. It can also be linked to guilt for something a person did that he or she views as a wrongful action.

Now we can bring the story back “down to earth” and simplify it by posing a theory in the form of a question.

If the primary unmet need of the vast majority of active Facebook users is to be liked by the other users who also have the same need and desire to be liked, and a significant majority of them have a dislike for their own self as indicated by the reluctance to click the “like button” in regards to their own uploaded personal thoughts and images, what is the “actual value” of the likes that are being exchanged and/or sought after?

My own personal opinion stands to reason that the end results and answers to this hypothetical question are what is being conveyed in the current drop in company stock value which has been in effect since Facebook became a publicly traded company as of two full weeks from today, and in even more intricate yet simplistic detail, the users are shown to be competing with actual businesses that provide goods and services on various level, for the attention (advertising) of the other users in an attempt to gain the greatest amount of interest and liking.

The Solution –

As stated above by former White House Chief Of Staff and now Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, we will begin the month with this frame of mind as we explore possible effective courses of action, again, beginning with the consideration of this different perspective.
