Not Safe For Work

Not suitable/safe for work (NSFW) is Internet slang or shorthand. Typically, the NSFW tag is used in e-mail, videos, and on interactive discussion areas (such as Internet forums, blogs, or community websites) to mark URLs or hyperlinks which contain material such as nudity, violence, pornography or profanity, which the viewer may not want to be seen accessing in a public or formal setting such as at work.

Determining a site to be NSFW is invariably subjective, and poses challenges for academics who study sexuality. The difficulty in identifying such content objectively has led to the creation of online tools to help individuals to identify NSFW content:

NSFW has particular relevance for individuals making personal use of the Internet at workplaces or schools which have policies prohibiting (even inadvertent) access to sexually provocative content. Companies and schools frequently adopt such policies because they regard the presence of sexual content as a misuse of company property (or education resources) and, potentially, a violation of sexual harassment policy.

On November 28, 2007, Fark.com founder Drew Curtis filed an application to trademark the phrase, but registration was denied.

Conversely, the term Safe For Work or sometimes abbreviated to SFW is used to label material that may have a questionable title or include subjects that could potentially be NSFW, but are not.

Moral Of The Story (Solution)

Well you see, what had happened was…..

For at least 8 years now, I have heard people that I know personally say that they have not been to PimpHop.com in a while because they were not able to access the website at work because the web filters at their employers location label it as adult content, which we can conclude is #NSFW, and it (web-server) makes this decision without viewing any of the content on the website but simply views the URL and classifies it as adult content, all while I conclude that most of the content is actually therapeutic and good for increased business and life productivity and some different strokes for different folks.

In the year 2008, when iPhones first came out, I was privileged to actually talk to a guy that had one, when we are at Hooters of all places, and I asked him to give me a demonstration to which he gladly obliged and then voluntarily, and I kid you not, voluntarily, without any shame or hesitation said, “hey, and check out my porn stash” and began to show me a short pornographic video clip on his phone to demonstrate the video capability of the device, working without Flash, the popular video display software at the time.

Fast forward to the 2009-2010 popularity explosion of social media websites such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram in which content that can be concluded by many as for adults only, with an endless supply of it on these and other websites, which can be viewed at work, passing through the filters as these social media websites are utilized by the masses, with many companies actually using them for business reasons, including Your Friendly Neighborhood PimpHop.com.

Long story shortened, one of the things that I actually enjoy most about my job is that what is somehow by common consensus determined as unsafe and appropriate for typical work environments is actually what is safe and appropriate in my own environment, and that which is safe in traditional environments is classified as #NSFW in our personal work environment as it jeopardizes the opportunity to offer our viewers the unsafe for work content that has the greatest demand, due to it’s #NSFW restriction which is what has been known to set the alarm of anticipation ringing for content that individuals receive that is tagged as follows.
